Tbilisi Airport to Kutaisi is about 234 km and takes roughly 3 hours 15 minutes, almost entirely on the main east-west highway. You bypass the city, run west along the Mtkvari valley through Mtskheta, Gori and Khashuri, then cross the Rikoti range — the watershed between eastern and western Georgia, and the point where the landscape visibly changes from dry hills to humid green. Kutaisi is the old capital of Imereti, with Bagrati Cathedral above the river and Gelati monastery on the hillside outside town. Taking it straight from the airport is common for travellers flying into Tbilisi but starting their trip in the west.
This is the busiest freight corridor in the country, so travel time varies more than the distance suggests — allow a margin if you have a train or flight at the other end. Gori and Uplistsikhe sit directly on the route and are the natural stop; say so at booking so the driver plans it. Gelati and Motsameta are a few kilometres outside Kutaisi and need their own half hour each. Western Georgia is markedly wetter than Tbilisi, so pack a layer even if you left the capital in sunshine. Prometheus Cave is 20 minutes north if you want a second stop.
| Option | Door-to-door | Price | Time | Luggage / group |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (OrbiTrip) | yes | known in advance | about 3 h 15 min | yes — per car, group pays once |
| Taxi (street / app) | yes | metered or negotiated at pick-up | about 3 h 15 min | limited for long routes; luggage space varies |
| Bus / marshrutka | no — station to station | ticket per person | timetable-bound, slower with stops | limited luggage, no seat guarantee |
Third-party options are listed for orientation only — OrbiTrip books private transfers. A per-car transfer is usually the cheapest door-to-door option for 2+ people with luggage; for a solo traveller on a budget the train or marshrutka may cost less.
Your driver tracks the flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign; waiting is free if the flight is delayed. After booking you receive the driver's phone number — call or message on WhatsApp if you cannot find each other. Pay the driver in cash. Payment is cash only, to the driver; no prepayment.
