Part of this route is unpaved and steep; it is normally open only from late May/June to October, and a 4x4 vehicle is required.
Gomismta to Kutaisi is about 105 km and takes considerably longer than the distance suggests, because the first part is the descent from the ridge on an unpaved track. You drop from around 2,000 m through forest to Ozurgeti, then cross the flat Colchis lowland north-east to Kutaisi — a journey that reverses the whole climate in about three hours, from alpine pasture to humid Imereti valley. It is the usual way out of the Guria highlands for anyone continuing to Kutaisi Airport or heading east rather than back to the coast.
Leave early. The descent is slow and you do not want to be doing it in fading light or after afternoon rain, when the track is at its worst. A 4x4 is needed for the first section even though the second half is ordinary road — book the vehicle for the hardest part of the journey, not the average. If you have a flight from Kutaisi, add a generous margin: the mountain section does not have a predictable time. Once you reach Ozurgeti the rest is straightforward, and Kutaisi's sights are an easy afternoon.
