Georgia 3 Days Itinerary: Tbilisi, Mtskheta and Kakheti

Short answer (a first visit): For a Georgia 3 days itinerary, we recommend a Tbilisi base: explore the city, visit Mtskheta, then spend a day around Sighnaghi in Kakheti. Treat these as full sightseeing days; adapt the order around your flights. Keep your hotel throughout and arrange the countryside stops before booking transport. For a private car with driver, see live prices for your date on this page.

Georgia in three days at a glance

Destination details were cross-checked against Maspindzeli Travel and TripMate Georgia. The order, pacing and booking checklist below are our recommendations.

Day one: what should you see in Tbilisi?

Start with Old Tbilisi, the historic walking area. We suggest choosing a short loop and letting lunch determine the pace. Leave room to pause at a cafe, browse a shop or return to the hotel. Your first day should help you settle into the city, especially if you have arrived without much sleep.

Make Abanotubani, the sulfur bath district, an optional anchor for the afternoon. If a bath matters to you, choose a bathhouse and ask about the room, availability and its own booking conditions directly. Otherwise, simply include the district in your walk. There is no need to make every stop an activity with a reservation.

For an early arrival, ask your hotel when you can actually enter the room. We recommend leaving this day flexible until that is settled. If your flight arrives late, move the city walk to the free afternoon after Mtskheta and start the countryside outings once you feel rested.

Day two: how should you plan Mtskheta?

Pair Jvari with Svetitskhoveli. Jvari stands above the meeting of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers; Svetitskhoveli is a medieval cathedral in Mtskheta. We suggest visiting the viewpoint and cathedral as separate stops, with a break for lunch or a town walk according to your interests.

When planning the car journey, name Jvari explicitly. Writing only “Mtskheta” leaves the actual sightseeing plan unclear. Send the driver your intended stops, your hotel address and whether you want to return to the same hotel. Ask for the proposed order before confirming the trip.

We recommend clothing that covers shoulders and knees for church visits. Follow instructions at the entrance and be considerate if a service is taking place. Keep the rest of the day open rather than adding a distant destination: it is a useful chance to revisit something in Tbilisi or take an unhurried dinner.

Day three: what belongs on a Kakheti day trip?

Kakheti is a wine region. Sighnaghi is a walled hilltop town overlooking the Alazani Valley, and Bodbe Monastery is another stop on this sightseeing route. We recommend building the day around those places and a cellar appointment that interests your group.

Choose the cellar before finalizing transport. Ask the host what the visit includes, whether food is available, which language they use and how to arrange a tasting. Tell them if someone does not drink alcohol or needs a different meal. Confirm any charges with the venue separately.

For the town walk, leave the exact distance open: agree where you will meet the driver and decide how far to explore when you arrive. We suggest putting your most important stop first and treating additional stops as optional. If lunch runs longer than expected, shorten the list instead of rushing everyone back to the car.

Prefer mountains to wine? Use the Kazbegi day-trip guide to plan a replacement outing. We recommend choosing the countryside experience you care about most and protecting enough time to enjoy it.

How do you arrange the transfers and sightseeing stops?

A private car with driver lets your group travel together. Before booking, describe the whole journey: pickup, sightseeing stops, any cellar reservation and the return destination. A search ending in Sighnaghi needs a clear discussion of the return journey if you intend to sleep in Tbilisi.

Where should you stay, and how should weather change the plan?

We recommend keeping the same Tbilisi hotel for this short visit. Before reserving, ask about vehicle access, luggage storage and your arrival arrangements. Choose a place that suits your walking preferences, and ask the property for a practical pickup point if the entrance is difficult to reach.

Check the forecast close to departure and pack layers, comfortable shoes and rain protection. Move outdoor walking to the clearer part of the day where possible. If the forecast would spoil your main reason for an outing, discuss a different day before changing venue reservations. Avoid committing every free afternoon in advance.

What should you leave out of a short Georgia trip?

We suggest resisting extra hotel changes and keeping the final day modest if you have a flight. Work backwards from your airline's airport arrival advice, then agree the pickup with your transport provider. If sightseeing would make that calculation uncomfortable, spend the remaining time in Tbilisi instead.

If your flights leave you with only a partial visit, remove an outing and keep the city walk. For more detail, use our Mtskheta guide and Kakheti sightseeing guide. Pick the stops that matter to your group before adding anything else.

Frequently asked questions

Is three days enough for a first visit to Georgia?

We recommend a focused visit based in Tbilisi, with a city day and outings to Mtskheta and Kakheti. Shorten the plan if your arrival or departure leaves only partial sightseeing days.

Where should we stay for this itinerary?

We suggest keeping the same Tbilisi hotel. Confirm luggage storage, arrival arrangements and a practical vehicle pickup point before booking.

Can we include Kazbegi instead of Kakheti?

Yes. We recommend replacing the Kakheti outing with a separately planned Kazbegi day, according to your interests and conditions for your date.

Does a transfer to Sighnaghi include the whole sightseeing day?

Confirm the complete journey before booking: pickup, Bodbe, Sighnaghi, any cellar appointment and your return destination. Make sure the agreed route matches your plan.

How much does the private car cost?

See live prices for your date on this page. OrbiTrip shows the per-vehicle price before booking; pay the driver in cash, with no prepayment and free cancellation.

Should we go to Kakheti on our departure day?

We recommend keeping departure day flexible. Work backwards from your airline’s airport arrival advice and agree the pickup. Stay in Tbilisi if the sightseeing plan would feel rushed.
