Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) Travel Guide 2026: Things to Do & How to Get There
Tucked beneath the 5,054 m cone of Mount Kazbek, the town of Stepantsminda — still universally called Kazbegi — is the headline mountain destination of Georgia. The reason is one unforgettable view: the 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church standing alone on a green ridge with the glaciated peak behind it. But Kazbegi is far more than a single photo. It is the base for waterfall walks, the otherworldly Truso Valley, the alpine hamlet of Juta under the Chaukhi massif, and the dramatic Dariali Gorge at the Russian border. This 2026 guide covers how to get there, how to reach the famous church, the best things to do and where to stay.
How to get to Kazbegi from Tbilisi
| Option | Price (2026) | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer / day tour | ~350 GEL per car | ~3 h + stops | Comfort, photo stops, groups |
| Marshrutka (shared minibus) | ~15 GEL one-way | ~3–3.5 h | Solo budget travel |
| Self-drive rental | car hire + fuel | ~3 h | Confident mountain drivers |
Marshrutkas leave Tbilisi's Didube station through the day for about 15 GEL and drop you in central Stepantsminda, but they do not stop at Ananuri or the viewpoints. A private transfer follows the same Georgian Military Highway but stops wherever you like — the fortress, the Friendship Monument, the Jvari Pass — at one fixed price per car. See our detailed Tbilisi to Kazbegi day trip guide for the full route.

Getting up to Gergeti Trinity Church
The Gergeti Trinity Church (Tsminda Sameba) sits at 2,170 m on a ridge above the village of Gergeti, a few kilometres from Stepantsminda. There are two ways up:
- Hike — a steep but rewarding 1.5–2 hour climb (about 400 m of ascent) on a clear trail through forest and meadow. Free, and the best way to earn the view.
- 4x4 shuttle — local Delica vans run up the rough road for roughly 25–30 GEL per seat return. Essential if you are short on time, travelling with kids, or visiting in winter when the trail is snowed under.
Dress modestly inside the church (covered shoulders and knees; wraps are usually available at the door). Go early or near sunset for the best light and fewer crowds.
Best things to do in and around Kazbegi
1. Gveleti Waterfalls
A short drive north toward the border, an easy 30–40 minute walk leads to the Gveleti waterfalls — a big and a small fall in a side valley. A relaxed half-day option that pairs well with the Dariali Gorge.
2. Truso Valley
One of the most surreal landscapes in Georgia: mineral springs, travertine pools, a soda-coloured river and ruined towers, with the abandoned village of Ketrisi. The trailhead is south of Kazbegi near Kvemo Okrokana. Full detail in our Truso Valley day trip guide.
3. Juta & the Chaukhi massif
About an hour from Kazbegi, Juta (2,200 m) is one of Georgia's highest villages and the gateway to the jagged Chaukhi peaks and the Chaukhi Pass trek to Roshka. A 4x4 is needed for the final stretch of road.
4. Dariali Gorge & Monastery
Right at the Russian frontier, the Dariali Gorge is a deep cleft where the Terek roars between cliffs, with a modern monastery complex. It is the historic gateway between the Caucasus and the north.
5. Rooms Hotel viewpoint & the village itself
Even without a hike, the terrace views across the valley to Gergeti and Kazbek — from the famous infinity-style hotel terraces or simply the edge of town — are extraordinary at sunrise.
Where to stay
Stepantsminda has everything from family guesthouses (cosy, home-cooked dinners, often under 100 GEL a room) to boutique and design hotels with panoramic Kazbek views. Staying overnight is strongly recommended: it lets you catch the church at sunrise or sunset, when day-trippers are gone and the peak often clears of cloud. Book ahead for July–August and winter ski weekends.
Food in Kazbegi
Mountain Georgian cooking is hearty and made for cold air. Look for khinkali (the soup dumplings said to have been born just down the road in Pasanauri), khachapuri cheese bread, mtsvadi (grilled pork skewers) and the local trout. Many guesthouses serve a generous home-cooked dinner if you ask in advance — often the best meal you will have. A handful of cafes and a couple of stylish restaurant-bars cluster near the main square; in peak season they fill up, so eat a little early or book ahead.
A suggested two-day plan
Day 1: Drive up from Tbilisi along the Military Highway, stopping at Ananuri and the Friendship Monument; check in at a Stepantsminda guesthouse; hike or take the 4x4 up to Gergeti Trinity Church for sunset. Day 2: An early start for either the Gveleti waterfalls and Dariali Gorge, or a longer outing to the Truso Valley or Juta, before driving back to Tbilisi in the late afternoon. This pace turns a rushed day trip into a proper mountain break and is easy to arrange with a private driver who waits and adapts to your plans.
Best time to visit
June and September are ideal for hiking — wildflowers or autumn colour, open trails and clearer views of Kazbek. July–August is warm and busy. Winter turns Gergeti into a snow-globe scene and pairs with skiing at nearby Gudauri, but the access road can close briefly for snow — check roads.ge and consider a 4x4 transfer. Whatever the season, mountain weather changes fast: bring layers and waterproofs even in summer.
Hiking around Kazbegi
Beyond the church, Kazbegi is one of Georgia's best trekking bases. The classic acclimatised objective is the Gergeti Glacier and the Sabertse / Kazbek meteo-station trail, a long full-day hike for fit walkers that climbs well above the church into glacial terrain. Gentler walks lead to the Gergeti viewpoints and the meadows above the village. For multi-day trekkers, the Juta–Chaukhi Pass–Roshka route is a Caucasus highlight. Always start early, carry water and windproof layers, and turn back if cloud closes in — weather on Kazbek changes within minutes, and snow can linger on high trails into July.
Practical tips
- Stepantsminda sits at ~1,740 m; take the first hours easy if you feel the altitude.
- Cash is useful for guesthouses, 4x4 seats and small cafes, though cards work in larger hotels.
- For the return, you can pre-book a Kazbegi to Tbilisi transfer so you are not left flagging a full marshrutka.
- Phone signal is good in town but patchy in the side valleys, so download offline maps before you set out on a hike or a 4x4 excursion.
- There are no large supermarkets, so buy any specialist supplies in Tbilisi; small shops in Stepantsminda cover the basics and bottled water.
