Why visit Tmogvi?

Tmogvi is one of the most dramatic ruins in southern Georgia. The fortress and medieval town stand high above the left bank of the Kura (Mtkvari) river, a few kilometres from Vardzia, and from below the walls seem to grow out of the rock. Most travellers drive past on the way to the cave city; stopping here gives you the valley almost to yourself.

Its history explains its position. First mentioned in the 9th century, Tmogvi guarded the route between the Mtkvari gorge and the Javakheti plateau. In 914 it withstood the army of Yusuf ibn Abi’l-Saj, and in later centuries it was rebuilt several times. The medieval writer, poet and philosopher Sargis Tmogveli came from here. In the 16th century the fortress came under Ottoman control.

What to see

Even from the valley road, Tmogvi is impressive: look up at the walls and towers on the ridge and the deep gorges that protect it. If you want to go closer, a path leads up towards the ruins; it is steep and rough, so wear good shoes, take water and allow time for the climb.

From the top you look down on the Mtkvari river winding through the gorge and across to the cliffs where Vanis Kvabebi and Vardzia are carved into the rock. It is one of the best viewpoints in the valley.
