Why visit Vanis Kvabebi?

Most travellers drive straight past Vanis Kvabebi on their way to the famous cave city of Vardzia. That is a pity: this cave monastery is older, quieter and every bit as atmospheric. It dates back to the 8th century and is carved into the steep cliffs of the Mtkvari river gorge, high above the valley.

Over the centuries the monks dug a maze of tunnels on several levels inside the mountain. The caves served as their cells, and a defensive wall was built in 1204 to protect the community. Walking through the passages today, you get a real sense of how monastic life was lived inside the rock.

What to see

Climb up to the defensive wall, built in 1204, which closes off the monastery from the slope below. Behind it are the two churches of the complex. The most striking is a small domed church that clings to the rock at the highest level of tunnels — an astonishing place for a church.

Then explore the tunnels and caves, the former cells of the monks, and enjoy the views down into the Mtkvari gorge. Some passages are narrow and uneven, so take your time and use a torch if you want to look into the darker caves.
