Tbilisi Airport to Vardzia is about 241 km and takes roughly 4 hours. The road goes west to Khashuri, then turns south through Borjomi and its gorge, climbs past Akhaltsikhe with its rebuilt Rabati fortress, and finally follows the Mtkvari upstream through increasingly bare, rocky country to Aspindza. Vardzia is a twelfth-century cave monastery carved into a cliff face above the river — hundreds of rooms on many levels, built under Queen Tamar as a fortress as much as a monastery. It is a long day from Tbilisi and the drive is genuinely half the experience.
Start early. Four hours each way makes this a full day, and arriving late means climbing the cliff in the hottest part of it. The site is steep, stepped and partly underground; shoes with grip matter and it is not suitable for anyone who struggles with stairs or confined spaces. Borjomi and Rabati fortress are both on the road and are the obvious stops — agree them at booking rather than deciding on the day. Bring water: the last stretch has few services. Many travellers stay overnight near Aspindza rather than drive both ways in one day.
| Option | Door-to-door | Price | Time | Luggage / group |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (OrbiTrip) | yes | known in advance | about 4 h 5 min | yes — per car, group pays once |
| Taxi (street / app) | yes | metered or negotiated at pick-up | about 4 h 5 min | limited for long routes; luggage space varies |
Third-party options are listed for orientation only — OrbiTrip books private transfers. A per-car transfer is usually the cheapest door-to-door option for 2+ people with luggage; for a solo traveller on a budget the train or marshrutka may cost less.
Your driver tracks the flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign; waiting is free if the flight is delayed. After booking you receive the driver's phone number — call or message on WhatsApp if you cannot find each other. Pay the driver in cash. Payment is cash only, to the driver; no prepayment.
