Part of this route is unpaved and steep; it is normally open only from late May/June to October, and a 4x4 vehicle is required.
Tbilisi Airport to Shatili is about 169 km but it is one of the hardest drives in Georgia and takes the best part of a day. You leave the Military Highway at Zhinvali and turn north-east into Khevsureti, following the Aragvi until the asphalt ends and the track climbs to the Datvisjvari Pass at roughly 2,676 m. Beyond it the road drops into the Arghuni gorge on the northern side of the range, and Shatili appears as a single fortified mass of medieval stone towers built into the slope, a few kilometres from the Chechen border. The road is the reason this place stayed as it is.
This is a seasonal 4x4 route, usually open from around June to early October — the pass is snowbound the rest of the year and there is no way around it. Confirm with your driver before booking, and accept that an early snowfall can close it without notice. A proper high-clearance 4x4 is essential; a normal car will not make the pass. Bring your passport: the area is a border zone and checks happen. There is no fuel and almost no phone coverage after Barisakho. Plan an overnight — going there and back in one day is possible but punishing.
| Option | Door-to-door | Price | Time | Luggage / group |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (OrbiTrip) | yes | known in advance | about 4 h 0 min | yes — per car, group pays once |
| Taxi (street / app) | yes | metered or negotiated at pick-up | about 4 h 0 min | limited for long routes; luggage space varies |
Third-party options are listed for orientation only — OrbiTrip books private transfers. A per-car transfer is usually the cheapest door-to-door option for 2+ people with luggage; for a solo traveller on a budget the train or marshrutka may cost less.
Your driver tracks the flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign; waiting is free if the flight is delayed. After booking you receive the driver's phone number — call or message on WhatsApp if you cannot find each other. Pay the driver in cash. Payment is cash only, to the driver; no prepayment.
