Tbilisi Airport to Mtskheta is a short hop of about 40 km, roughly 45 minutes. You leave the terminal, skirt the eastern edge of the city and join the road north along the Mtkvari valley, with Jvari Monastery visible on the ridge ahead long before you arrive. Mtskheta was the capital of the Georgian kingdom for centuries and its cathedral, Svetitskhoveli, still anchors the old town. Going straight from the airport rather than via central Tbilisi saves the city traffic entirely, which is why many travellers start their trip here and see Tbilisi afterwards.
This is the easiest first stop in Georgia after a long flight — the old town is compact and walkable, so you do not need energy for a full day. Ask the driver to stop at Jvari Monastery on the ridge above: the view over the meeting of the two rivers is the one everyone comes for, and it adds only about twenty minutes. Svetitskhoveli asks for covered shoulders and knees; women are usually offered a scarf at the gate. If your flight lands late at night, agree the pick-up point with your driver in advance — arrivals is quiet at those hours.
| Option | Door-to-door | Price | Time | Luggage / group |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (OrbiTrip) | yes | known in advance | about 50 min | yes — per car, group pays once |
| Taxi (street / app) | yes | metered or negotiated at pick-up | about 50 min | limited for long routes; luggage space varies |
| Bus / marshrutka | no — station to station | ticket per person | timetable-bound, slower with stops | limited luggage, no seat guarantee |
Third-party options are listed for orientation only — OrbiTrip books private transfers. A per-car transfer is usually the cheapest door-to-door option for 2+ people with luggage; for a solo traveller on a budget the train or marshrutka may cost less.
Your driver tracks the flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign; waiting is free if the flight is delayed. After booking you receive the driver's phone number — call or message on WhatsApp if you cannot find each other. Pay the driver in cash. Payment is cash only, to the driver; no prepayment.
