Expect a slower, winding section on the approach; no seasonal closures in a normal year.
Tbilisi Airport to Lagodekhi is about 148 km and takes roughly 2 hours 30 minutes. The road heads east into Kakheti and then runs the length of the Alazani valley, with the wall of the Greater Caucasus on your left the whole way and vineyards on your right. Lagodekhi sits at the far eastern end of the valley, right against the Azerbaijani border, and the town exists mostly as the gateway to the Lagodekhi Protected Areas — one of the oldest reserves in the region, with forest trails that climb from the valley floor towards the ridge. It is the end of the line in this direction, so the drive is the only practical way in.
Most people come for the reserve, so start early: the walk to the waterfall is a half-day and the longer route to Black Rock Lake needs a full one with an overnight. Register at the visitor centre before you set off — it is required and it is also where you get current trail conditions. Bring cash; the town is small. The valley is humid in midsummer and the trails get slippery after rain, so proper shoes matter more here than on most Kakheti trips. If you want to combine it with wine, Kvareli is on the same road about 40 minutes back.
