Expect a slower, winding section on the approach; no seasonal closures in a normal year.
Tbilisi Airport to Kvareli is about 132 km and takes around 2 hours 15 minutes. The road runs east into Kakheti, then north-east along the Alazani valley with the Greater Caucasus rising steeply on your left the whole way. Kvareli sits at the foot of that wall, in the part of Kakheti best known for Kindzmarauli, and the vineyards run right up to the edge of town. Lake Ilia is a few minutes away. Arriving straight from the airport suits this route because Kvareli is far enough east that doing it as a day trip from Tbilisi wastes most of the day on the road.
Wine tasting is the point here, so decide in advance who is not drinking — or simply keep the driver for the day, which is why most people book a car rather than drive themselves. Cellars usually prefer a call ahead, especially the smaller family ones; your accommodation can arrange it. September and October are the harvest months and the whole valley is busy, so book rooms and tastings early. The mountain side of town is noticeably cooler in the evening. If you want to continue to Telavi or Sighnaghi afterwards, agree it when booking so the driver plans the day.
| Option | Door-to-door | Price | Time | Luggage / group |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (OrbiTrip) | yes | known in advance | about 2 h 0 min | yes — per car, group pays once |
| Taxi (street / app) | yes | metered or negotiated at pick-up | about 2 h 0 min | limited for long routes; luggage space varies |
Third-party options are listed for orientation only — OrbiTrip books private transfers. A per-car transfer is usually the cheapest door-to-door option for 2+ people with luggage; for a solo traveller on a budget the train or marshrutka may cost less.
Your driver tracks the flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign; waiting is free if the flight is delayed. After booking you receive the driver's phone number — call or message on WhatsApp if you cannot find each other. Pay the driver in cash. Payment is cash only, to the driver; no prepayment.
