In winter (December–March) expect snow on the passes; drivers use winter tyres and the road may close for a few hours after heavy snowfall.
Tbilisi Airport to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) is about 169 km and takes roughly 3 hours. The whole route is the Georgian Military Highway: you pass Mtskheta, follow the Aragvi up past the Ananuri fortress on its reservoir, then climb through Gudauri to the Jvari Pass at 2,395 m before dropping into the Tergi valley. Stepantsminda sits at the foot of Mount Kazbek, with Gergeti Trinity Church on the ridge above the town — the image most people have of Georgia before they arrive. Going direct from the airport is common because the drive is long enough that breaking it in Tbilisi costs you a day.
This is a mountain road and the Jvari Pass can close at short notice in winter; there is no alternative route, so keep arrival-day plans flexible and give the driver your flight number. Gergeti Trinity is above the town on a steep track — walk up in summer or take a 4x4, but do not assume a sedan can make it. Ananuri and the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument are both directly on the road and add around forty minutes together. It is far colder at 1,750 m than in Tbilisi, and Kazbek is often in cloud — allow two nights if you want a real chance of seeing it.

Third-party options are listed for orientation only — OrbiTrip books private transfers. A per-car transfer is usually the cheapest door-to-door option for 2+ people with luggage; for a solo traveller on a budget the train or marshrutka may cost less.

After booking you receive the driver's phone number — call or message on WhatsApp if you cannot find each other. Pay the driver in cash. Available online payment methods are shown when booking.
