Tbilisi Airport to Gori is about 101 km and takes roughly 1 hour 30 minutes, almost all of it on the main east-west highway. You leave the airport, bypass the city and run west along the Mtkvari valley through Mtskheta and Kaspi, with the Caucasus wall on your right for most of the drive. Gori sits below its old hilltop fortress in the middle of the Shida Kartli plain. Most travellers come for the Stalin Museum in the town centre and for Uplistsikhe, the rock-cut town carved into a cliff about ten kilometres further on — the two are usually done together in one stop.
Ask your driver to include Uplistsikhe when you book rather than adding it on the day; it is a short detour from Gori but it changes the timing. The rock-cut site has almost no shade and the stone reflects heat, so in July and August go early or late. Footing is uneven across the whole site — trainers, not sandals. The Stalin Museum keeps standard hours and is closed on some public holidays, worth checking before you set out. If you are heading onward to Kutaisi or Batumi the same day, Gori is a natural lunch stop on the way.
| Option | Door-to-door | Price | Time | Luggage / group |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (OrbiTrip) | yes | known in advance | about 1 h 30 min | yes — per car, group pays once |
| Taxi (street / app) | yes | metered or negotiated at pick-up | about 1 h 30 min | limited for long routes; luggage space varies |
| Bus / marshrutka | no — station to station | ticket per person | timetable-bound, slower with stops | limited luggage, no seat guarantee |
Third-party options are listed for orientation only — OrbiTrip books private transfers. A per-car transfer is usually the cheapest door-to-door option for 2+ people with luggage; for a solo traveller on a budget the train or marshrutka may cost less.
Your driver tracks the flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign; waiting is free if the flight is delayed. After booking you receive the driver's phone number — call or message on WhatsApp if you cannot find each other. Pay the driver in cash. Payment is cash only, to the driver; no prepayment.
