Expect a slower, winding section on the approach; no seasonal closures in a normal year.
The drive from Tbilisi to Ninotsminda covers about 172 km and takes roughly 3 hours. You leave the capital heading south-west, pass Tsalka and climb steadily onto the Javakheti plateau — one of the highest inhabited areas in Georgia, sitting above 1,900 m. The scenery changes completely on the way up: the green hills around Tbilisi give way to open, almost treeless volcanic uplands dotted with small lakes and grazing herds. Ninotsminda itself is a quiet plateau town close to the Armenian border, and most of the villages around it are Armenian-speaking. A private car matters here because public transport to Javakheti is sparse and slow, and the plateau is exposed — you want a driver who knows the road in winter.
Leave Tbilisi in the morning: the plateau is high and the weather turns fast in the afternoon, especially between November and April. Dress warmer than you would in Tbilisi — it is routinely 8-10°C colder up there even in summer. Fuel and cafes thin out after Tsalka, so stop while you still can. If you are continuing to the Bavra border crossing into Armenia, tell your driver when you book so the timing works. Bring cash; card acceptance in the smaller plateau villages is unreliable. Winter travel is possible but ask about road conditions the day before.

Third-party options are listed for orientation only — OrbiTrip books private transfers. A per-car transfer is usually the cheapest door-to-door option for 2+ people with luggage; for a solo traveller on a budget the train or marshrutka may cost less.
