The Zugdidi–Mestia road is asphalt but narrow and winding; in winter allow extra time and check conditions after heavy snow.
The drive from Mestia to Poti covers 230 km and takes about 5 hours. You start in the high Svaneti mountains, where the road winds past stone towers and forested slopes. The route descends through the Enguri valley, following the river toward Zugdidi. The landscape shifts from alpine peaks to green hills and then to the flat, humid lowlands of Samegrelo. In Zugdidi, you leave the mountains behind and continue west across the Kolkheti plain to Poti on the Black Sea coast. Most people stop in Zugdidi for a break, and sometimes near the Enguri dam for photos. With a private car, you can pause where you like, keep your luggage with you, and travel door to door without changing buses. The road is asphalt but narrow and winding in the mountain section, so a local driver who knows the turns makes the trip easier.
Leave Mestia in the morning to reach Poti before dark, especially in winter when the Zugdidi–Mestia road can be slow after snow. Check road conditions if you are traveling between November and March. Bring cash for small cafes along the way, as card payments may not be available. A warm layer is useful in the mountains at the start, but you will not need it in Poti. If you have children, tell the driver in advance so a child seat can be arranged. Luggage fits easily in a private car, and you can keep it with you at stops. No passport is needed for this route.
