Kutaisi Airport to Borjomi is about 146 km and takes roughly 2 hours 20 minutes. The road runs east along the main highway to Khashuri and then turns south into the Borjomi gorge, where the valley narrows and pine forest closes in on both sides. Borjomi is a spa town built around its mineral springs, with a park along the river where you can drink the water at the source, and it is the main gateway to Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park — one of the largest protected areas in Europe. The change from open Imereti farmland to forested gorge happens in the last twenty minutes.
The mineral water at the park spring is warm and strongly sulphurous — very different from the bottled version, and worth trying once. The cable car up to the plateau gives the view most people photograph. If you want the national park rather than the town, say so when booking: the trailheads are outside Borjomi and the driver needs to know. Bakuriani is 30 minutes further up and is the natural pairing in winter. The gorge holds cloud, so it can be grey in Borjomi while Kutaisi is sunny — bring a layer regardless of the forecast.
