Telavi to Kazbegi Transfer: From Wine Country to the Mountains

Short answer (2026/27): Many travellers combine Kakheti, Georgia’s best-known wine region, with the mountains of Kazbegi. Instead of going back to Tbilisi and starting again, a private car with driver can take you directly from your hotel in Telavi, the main city of Kakheti, to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi), a mountain town at about 1,740 metres in the north of Georgia, just below Gergeti Trinity Church and Mount Kazbek. Stops on the way are free. In the cold season, mountain roads depend on the weather, so keep a flexible date. See live prices for your date on this page.

Telavi to Kazbegi at a glance

Facts about Telavi, Kakheti and Kazbegi come from Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Advantour and Georgia.travel.

Why combine Kakheti and Kazbegi?

Kakheti and Kazbegi are two of the most rewarding regions of Georgia, and they could hardly be more different. Kakheti, around Telavi, is the country’s best-known wine region: vineyards, family cellars, monasteries and long lunches. Kazbegi is high mountain country: glaciers, alpine valleys and Gergeti Trinity Church on its hill above Stepantsminda.

Many itineraries visit both, but by public transport you usually have to go back through Tbilisi, which means extra hours, two separate journeys and carrying luggage through the capital. A private transfer from Telavi to Kazbegi turns this into one comfortable day of travel.

It also works the other way round: if you start in the mountains, the same route takes you from Kazbegi down to Kakheti for a few relaxed days of wine, food and monasteries. Either way, you see two very different sides of Georgia in one trip, without a detour through the capital.

The journey

The route leaves the Alazani valley, crosses back towards the Georgian Military Road and climbs north into the Caucasus. Your driver chooses the best road for the day and the season. It is a full day’s drive with a lot to see, so we recommend an early start and at least one long stop.

Stops on the way

With a private driver, stops on the way are free, and this route has plenty of good ones. On the Georgian Military Road, the Ananuri fortress above the Zhinvali reservoir is the classic stop, and further north there are viewpoints over the mountains as the road climbs. Our Georgian Military Highway road trip guide lists the best stops in detail. Tell your driver what you would like to see when you book.

Arriving in Kazbegi

Stepantsminda, still widely known by its old name Kazbegi, is a mountain town at about 1,740 metres. Just outside town, Gergeti Trinity Church stands on its hill, seen against the backdrop of Mount Kazbek; reaching it is the first thing most visitors do. Our Gergeti Trinity Church hike guide explains the walk and the alternatives.

Planning tips

Travelling in the cold season

From late autumn to spring, conditions on the mountain road can change quickly, and snow is normal in Kazbegi. We recommend checking the forecast and road conditions the day before, keeping your date flexible and bringing warm clothes. Free cancellation makes it easy to move the trip if the weather turns. Our Jvari Pass in winter guide and Kazbegi in winter guide explain what to expect.
