Tbilisi to Zugdidi Transfer: Private Car, Train or Bus

Short answer (2026/27): Zugdidi is the capital of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region in western Georgia, about 30 km from the Black Sea, and the town most travellers pass through on the way to Mestia and Upper Svaneti. From Tbilisi you can take the train, a marshrutka or a private car with driver. A private transfer is the most flexible choice: door-to-door from your Tbilisi address, free stops along the main east–west road, and the option to continue towards Svaneti on another day. In Zugdidi itself, plan time for the Dadiani palace complex and its 19th-century botanical garden.

Why travel from Tbilisi to Zugdidi?

Zugdidi is the capital of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region and the main town of Samegrelo (Mingrelia), a region known for its boldly spiced cooking. It is not on most first-time itineraries as a destination in itself, but many travellers pass through it on their way to Mestia and Upper Svaneti. That makes it a natural place to break the long journey from the capital to the mountains.

There is also a good reason to stop for a few hours. The Dadiani palace complex, the former residence of the princes of Samegrelo, is open to visitors and is the town’s most impressive historical landmark. Its centrepiece is the 19th-century palace of Princess Ekaterine Dadiani, and next to the palaces lies a botanical garden that also dates from the 19th century. Our Dadiani Palace guide covers the visit in detail.

The drive from Tbilisi to Zugdidi

The road follows Georgia’s main east–west highway: west past Gori, over the central mountains into Imereti, around Kutaisi and on through the lowlands of Samegrelo. It is a long day in the car, so we recommend leaving in the morning and treating the journey as part of the trip rather than a transfer to get over with.

With a private driver you can break the journey wherever it suits you, and stops on the way are free. Popular ideas are a coffee and a short walk in Gori, a lunch break in Imereti, or a detour to a sight near Kutaisi if you have the energy. Tell your driver your plan when you book, and agree any longer detours in advance so the timing works.

In autumn and winter, check the weather the day before. If you plan to continue towards Svaneti, mountain conditions matter much more than the lowland road; our Svaneti in winter guide explains what to expect.

Continuing from Zugdidi to Mestia

For most visitors, Zugdidi is a stopover rather than the end of the journey. You can spend a night in Zugdidi, see the palace complex and continue up into the mountains the next morning with fresh eyes and daylight. Splitting the trip this way is easier on everyone, especially with children. Our Zugdidi to Mestia transfer guide covers the mountain section, and our Tbilisi to Mestia transfer guide compares doing the whole route in one day.
