Why visit Ujarma?

Ujarma is one of the most important historic sites on the way from Tbilisi into Kakheti, yet many travellers drive straight past. It is an ancient fortress-town, set above the Iori river in green hill country, and its ruins tell the story of one of Georgia’s best-loved kings.

Ujarma was a royal residence that flourished under King Vakhtang Gorgasali, who strengthened the fortress and built a citadel inside it. According to tradition, the king died here after being mortally wounded in battle. In the 10th century the fortress was destroyed by Arab forces, and it was later restored. Today the walls and towers on the ridge are a quiet, evocative place to stop.

What to see

Walk up through the remains of the fortress-town: the walls and towers, the citadel on the higher ground and the remains of other buildings, including water reservoirs. Take your time on the upper level, where the views open over the Iori valley and the surrounding hills.

The site is open and uneven, so wear good shoes. It is a peaceful place, often with few other visitors, which makes it easy to imagine the royal court that once lived here.
