Why go up Mtatsminda?
Mtatsminda, the “Holy Mountain”, rises directly above central Tbilisi, and its summit is the highest point of the city. It is where locals go for a family day out, for a first date on the Ferris wheel, or simply to see the whole of Tbilisi spread out below: the Old Town, the Mtkvari river, Narikala Fortress on the opposite ridge and the mountains on the horizon on a clear day.
The mountain combines three very different experiences: the amusement park on the summit, the panoramic views, and the quiet Mtatsminda Pantheon halfway up, one of the most important memorial sites in Georgia. You can do all three in one unhurried visit.
The amusement park and the Ferris wheel
On top of the mountain is Mtatsminda Park, an amusement park with various attractions: carousels and children’s rides, a roller coaster, a dark ride and, most famous of all, a big Ferris wheel at the edge of the mountain. A ride on the wheel is one of the best ways to see Tbilisi from above, especially at sunset.
Rides are paid individually with a park access card bought at the cash desk, so families can choose a few attractions rather than paying for everything. Check the current opening hours before you go; some rides may close in bad weather or out of season.
How to get to Mtatsminda Park
The classic way up is the funicular, which climbs from the city centre to the park through the trees, with the view opening up behind you. The other option is public transport: bus number 124 runs up to the park. Hiking to the top is possible but steep, so we recommend going up by funicular or bus and, if you feel like it, walking down along the paved path with its small viewpoints.
| Option | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Funicular | The classic experience and the views | Check hours and fares on the day |
| Bus number 124 | A budget alternative | Less scenic; check the timetable for the evening |
| Walk down | Active travellers | Paved but steep; good shoes help |
| Taxi or private car | Families with small children | Drops you at the park by road |
The Mtatsminda Pantheon
Partway up the mountain, around the church of St David (Mamadaviti), lies the Mtatsminda Pantheon of writers and public figures. Many of Georgia’s best-known writers, poets and public figures are buried here, and the terrace in front of the church has its own fine view over the city. It is a quiet, dignified place: dress modestly for the church and keep your voice down.
The pantheon is a natural stop if you walk down from the park, or a separate short visit from the lower part of the mountain.
