In short: shared transport is priced per seat but runs to a timetable and rarely suits a village church, a taxi app is unreliable for the way back from the mountains, and a private car is priced per whole car with free waiting and the same driver both ways.

Why visit Nikortsminda?

Nikortsminda is one of the finest medieval churches in Georgia, and one of the reasons to travel up into Racha. It was built at the beginning of the 11th century on the order of King Bagrat III, and it is on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.

What makes it special is the stone carving. The facades are covered with rich ornaments and narrative reliefs, so walking slowly around the outside is as rewarding as going in. Above them rises a massive, high dome. Inside, the walls are decorated with frescoes from the 17th century.

The setting adds to the visit: the cathedral stands in a small village among the hills of Racha, a quiet region of forests, rivers and wine villages that few travellers reach. A day here feels very different from the busy sights around Kutaisi.

What to see

Start outside. Walk all the way around the cathedral and look closely at the facades: the carved arches, ornaments and figure scenes are the highlight, and each side is different. Step back to see the dome above the green hills of Racha.

Then go inside and let your eyes adjust to the soft light. The 17th-century frescoes cover the walls and the dome. It is an active church, so keep quiet, dress modestly and ask before taking photos during a service.
