Season and weather
Operators fly all year when the weather allows. Summer and early autumn bring thermals and the longest flights. In winter you fly over the ski slopes; SkyAtlantida lists its winter season as 5 December – 15 April, and winter flights are usually shorter. Strong wind, fog or heavy snowfall stop flights, and the pilot makes the final call on the day. Book a slot a few days ahead, especially on summer weekends and ski holidays. Keep your plans flexible and ask how the operator reschedules if the weather turns.
Safety: what to check before you book
- Certified tandem pilot: fly only with a certified pilot and a registered operator; ask about the pilot's experience.
- Insurance: ask whether passenger insurance is included and what it covers. SkyAtlantida says every passenger is insured; XParagliding asks you to confirm coverage with the operator. Check your own travel insurance for air sports too.
- Weight: operators set weight limits; tell them in advance if you weigh more than about 100 kg.
- Clothes: closed-toe shoes are required (no sandals) and it is colder in the air than on the ground, so bring a warm layer.
- Weather: never push a pilot to fly in bad conditions. A cancelled flight is normal in the mountains.
Plan the day: flight plus Kazbegi
Gudauri is on the same road as Stepantsminda (Kazbegi), further north. A relaxed day is Ananuri in the morning, your flight in Gudauri around midday and Gergeti views in the afternoon. Our Kazbegi & the Mountain Road private day trip covers these stops for 418 GEL per car (up to 4 guests, about 10 hours). When you book, tell us your flight time and ask whether it fits the itinerary. Staying overnight? See the Gudauri resort guide, the Tbilisi to Gudauri transfer guide and Gudauri to Kazbegi.
