Why visit Betania?

Betania is one of the most rewarding short trips from Tbilisi. It feels far from the city: the monastery stands in the quiet, wooded valley of the Vere river, and the last part of the road leads down through the forest. It is dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God, and its name comes from the village of Bethany in the New Testament.

The main reason to come is inside the church. The murals are a high point of medieval Georgian wall painting, and on the north wall you can see Queen Tamar, one of Georgia’s most famous rulers, together with her father Giorgi III and her son Lasha-Giorgi. Portraits of Tamar are rare, which makes this one special.

What to see

The main church is a cross-dome church from around the turn of the 13th century. Step inside and let your eyes adjust: the murals are old and partly damaged, but the royal portraits on the north wall and the religious scenes around them are still clear enough to admire. Take your time and look up into the dome.

Then walk around the grounds. The monastery sits on a slope among the trees, and the setting, with forest on all sides and the sound of the river below, is a big part of the experience. It is an active monastery, so keep quiet and respect the monks’ daily life.
