Batumi to Zugdidi Transfer: Private Car, Stops & the Road to Svaneti

Short answer (2026/27): Zugdidi is the capital of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region, about 30 km inland from the Black Sea, and the town most travellers pass through on the way to Mestia and Upper Svaneti. From Batumi, a private car with driver is the simplest way to get there: door-to-door from your hotel, along the coast and through the Samegrelo lowlands, with free stops on the way. In Zugdidi, see the Dadiani palace complex and its 19th-century botanical garden, and spend the night before continuing to the mountains. See live prices for your date on this page.

Why go from Batumi to Zugdidi?

Most people who travel from Batumi to Zugdidi are heading for the mountains. Zugdidi is the usual stopover on the way to Mestia and Upper Svaneti, so arriving from the coast, spending a night and continuing the next morning splits a long journey into two comfortable days.

Zugdidi also deserves a few hours of its own. The Dadiani palace complex, the former residence of the princes of Samegrelo, is open to visitors and is the town’s most impressive historical landmark, and next to the palaces lies a botanical garden that dates from the 19th century. Our Dadiani Palace guide covers the visit in detail.

The route from Batumi

The road leaves Batumi to the north, follows the Black Sea coast past the resorts of Adjara and Guria and then turns inland into the green lowlands of Samegrelo. It is a pleasant drive with the sea on one side for the first part, and there are plenty of places to stop for coffee, a beach walk or lunch.

Stops and detours on the way

With a private driver, stops on the way are free and waiting is free, so you can shape the journey around what interests you. A coffee by the sea in one of the coastal towns is an easy first break. If you have time and the weather is good, a detour to Martvili Canyon, also in Samegrelo, turns the transfer into a day out: the canyon is known for its turquoise water, boat rides and walking paths. Our Batumi to Martvili Canyon guide explains the visit.

Tell your driver your plan when you book, and agree any longer detour in advance so you still reach Zugdidi in daylight.

Continuing to Mestia and Svaneti

For most visitors, Zugdidi is a stopover rather than the end of the journey. We recommend a night in Zugdidi and an early start the next day, so the mountain section is driven in daylight. Our Zugdidi to Mestia transfer guide covers that part of the trip, and our Batumi to Mestia transfer guide compares doing the whole route in one go. In the cold season, check mountain conditions before you set off.
