Short answer (2026/27): Prometheus Cave, also known as Kumistavi Cave, is a karst cave in the Imereti region of western Georgia. Six of its 22 halls are open to visitors, with stalactites, stalagmites and other mineral formations, and part of the visit is a boat ride on the underground river. From Batumi it makes a full day trip; the easiest way is a private car with driver, who waits while you are inside and can add a stop such as Martvili Canyon or Kutaisi. Bring a warm layer: the cave stays cool all year. See live prices for your date on this page.

What is Prometheus Cave?

Prometheus Cave is one of Georgia’s most popular natural attractions: a karst cave in the Imereti region whose halls are filled with stalactites, stalagmites and other mineral formations, lit in changing colours along the visitor route. It is also known as Kumistavi Cave, after the nearby village, and it takes its famous name from the legend of Prometheus, who in Georgian lore was chained to a mountain in the Caucasus.

The cave was discovered by Georgian speleologists in the early 1980s and turned into a modern tourist attraction in 2010 and the years after. Today it has 22 halls in total, six of which are open to visitors, connected by a walking route with steps and handrails.

What to expect inside

The walking route. A guided route leads you through the six open halls. Paths are paved and lit, but there are steps and some damp sections, so wear comfortable shoes with a good grip.

The boat ride. Part of the visit is a boat ride on the cave’s underground river, one of the highlights for most visitors. Check on arrival whether the boat section is running that day.

The legend. Georgian tradition links the area to the myth of a hero chained to a mountain for defying the gods; in Georgian folklore he is Amirani, close cousin of the Greek Prometheus. Visitors will hear the story from the guides, and it is a nice detail to share with children before you go in.

What to bring. The cave is noticeably cooler than the outside air in summer and stays cool all year, so bring a light jacket or sweater even on a hot day.

How to get from Batumi to Prometheus Cave

The route runs north from Batumi along the Black Sea coast and then inland through the lowlands towards Kutaisi and the cave. It is a long day, so we recommend an early start. Public transport is possible but requires changes, usually via Kutaisi and Tskaltubo, and the last part to the cave needs local transport. A private car with driver is far simpler: the driver takes you to the entrance, waits while you are inside and brings you back to your Batumi hotel the same evening.

Make it a full day in Imereti

Because the drive from Batumi is long, it is worth adding a second sight. With a private driver, stops on the way are free, so you can combine the cave with Martvili Canyon in Samegrelo, see our Batumi to Martvili Canyon guide, or with the spa town of Tskaltubo nearby, described in our Tskaltubo and Prometheus Cave guide. If you are staying in Kutaisi instead, our Prometheus Cave and Martvili Canyon day trip is the shorter version of the same idea.
