Tbilisi to Kobuleti 2026: Transfer, Train & Cost Guide

Kobuleti is the Black Sea resort that many travellers overlook on the way to Batumi — and that is exactly its charm. A long pebble beach, a leafy seafront promenade, calmer streets and lower prices make it a favourite for families and anyone who wants the coast without Batumi's high-rise buzz. It sits about 25 km north of Batumi, so you get the same warm sea and easy day trips with a gentler pace. This 2026 guide explains every way to get from Tbilisi to Kobuleti — train, marshrutka and private transfer — with real prices, travel times and honest advice on whether Kobuleti or Batumi suits your holiday.

Short answer (2026): Kobuleti is about 350 km / 5–5.5 hours west of Tbilisi. The cheapest comfortable option is the train (~4.5–5 h, stops right in Kobuleti). A marshrutka from Tbilisi is the cheapest of all but cramped for the distance. A private transfer is the most flexible at around 400 GEL (~US$150) per car door-to-door, with stops along the way. You pay the driver directly — OrbiTrip's platform is free and shows a fixed price up front.

Option 1: Train (great value)

Kobuleti is a stop on the modern Tbilisi–Batumi railway, so the fast day train that most people take to Batumi will drop you right in Kobuleti about 20 minutes earlier. The ride takes roughly 4.5–5 hours through Georgia's green heartland, with assigned seats, air-conditioning and far more legroom than a minibus. Tickets cost about 25–55 GEL depending on first or second class, and they sell out in peak summer — book a few days ahead online. The catch: Kobuleti's station is a short taxi ride from the beachfront guesthouses, and you still need to handle luggage and transfers at each end. For a full coast comparison see our Tbilisi to Batumi by train guide.

Option 2: Marshrutka (cheapest)

Shared marshrutka minibuses run from Tbilisi toward Batumi and Kobuleti for roughly 25–35 GEL. They are the cheapest option, but five to six hours in a packed minibus with limited luggage space is a lot for a family or after a long flight. They also drop at the station or roadside, not your accommodation.

Option 3: Private transfer (most comfortable)

A private transfer is the easiest way to reach Kobuleti, especially with children, beach gear or after an international flight. You are collected from your Tbilisi hotel (or directly from the airport) and driven door-to-door to your Kobuleti guesthouse, with the freedom to break the journey — a lunch stop, a quick look at Shekvetili and its dendrological park, or the Mtirala rainforest turn-off. Pricing is per car, not per seat, so a family of four shares one fixed fare of around 400 GEL. With OrbiTrip you see that price before booking, pick a vehicle to fit your luggage, get the driver's contact to agree pickup and stops, and pay the driver directly at the end — no prepayment, no meter.

What to do in Kobuleti

Arriving by air: Kutaisi & Batumi airports

You do not have to start in Tbilisi. Batumi airport (BUS) is the closest, only about 30 km south of Kobuleti — a 30–40 minute transfer. Kutaisi airport (KUT), a major low-cost hub, is roughly 110 km away (about 1.5–2 hours), and is often the cheapest way to fly into western Georgia. If you land at either, a pre-booked private transfer straight to your Kobuleti guesthouse saves you hunting for a taxi with luggage after a flight. Tbilisi airport is the furthest at ~360 km, so if your holiday is purely about the coast, flying into Kutaisi or Batumi is worth considering.

Getting around Kobuleti & travelling with kids

Kobuleti is small and walkable: most guesthouses are within a few hundred metres of the beach, and the promenade runs the length of the resort. For trips along the coast there are cheap shared minibuses to Batumi every few minutes, plus local taxis. Families appreciate the resort's gentler pace — the long shallow shoreline, shaded promenade for strollers, and quieter roads than central Batumi. Pack water shoes for the pebble beach (which gets hot at midday), sun protection, and a light cover-up for the breeze that picks up most afternoons. Most guesthouses can arrange a cot or extra bed if you ask when booking.

Best time to visit

The Black Sea coast is a summer destination: June to September brings warm sea and long beach days, with July–August busiest and priciest. May and late September are pleasant and quieter. Winters are mild but wet and most beach businesses close, so plan a coast trip for the warm half of the year.

Money, connectivity & practical notes

Kobuleti is inexpensive by coast standards: guesthouse rooms, family cafes and fresh fruit from roadside stalls all cost less than in central Batumi. Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants, but keep some cash for small guesthouses, beach cafes and minibus fares. A local SIM from Magti, Silknet or Cellfie is cheap and gives reliable 4G along the whole coast, useful for booking transfers and checking train times. Pharmacies and small supermarkets line the main street, and the beach is busiest — and hottest — from late morning, so many families swim early and again in the cooler evening.

How an OrbiTrip transfer works

Choose your route, pick a vehicle for your group and luggage, and see a transparent fixed price before you confirm. You get the driver's contact to agree the exact pickup time and any stops, and you pay the agreed fare directly to the driver at the end of the trip — no prepayment and no surprises. Child seats and English- or Russian-speaking drivers can be requested at booking. The platform itself is free to use; the price you see is the driver's fare.
