Mestia — the heart of Upper Svaneti with its medieval towers, UNESCO villages and the Tetnuldi ski slopes — is the trip everyone wants and the logistics everyone underestimates. It is far: 460 km from Tbilisi, with the final 130 km climbing a mountain gorge. Every option below works in 2026; they just trade money, time and certainty differently.

The flight: fastest, least certain
Vanilla Sky's small planes hop from Natakhtari airfield (30 minutes north of Tbilisi) to Mestia's tiny Queen Tamar airport in under an hour, with mountain views that justify the window seat. Two honest caveats: seats sell out weeks in advance in season, and mountain weather cancels flights with little notice. Treat the flight as a bonus, not a plan — and know how you would continue by road if the morning turns cloudy.
The night train + Zugdidi combo
The classic backpacker route: overnight train from Tbilisi to Zugdidi, arrive early, then a marshrutka (or a pre-booked driver) up the Enguri gorge — about 3 hours to Mestia. You save a hotel night and travel the ugly flat part of the route asleep. Downsides: train tickets sell out in summer, and the Zugdidi marshrutka stand at 06:30 is a negotiation scene.
Marshrutkas: cheap, long, cramped
Direct vans run from Tbilisi (9–10 hours), Kutaisi (~4.5 h) and Batumi (~5–6 h). They are the budget benchmark and perfectly survivable from Kutaisi or Batumi. From Tbilisi, ten hours in a packed Sprinter with luggage on your knees is a serious price for saving money — most travellers who do it once fly or split the route next time.
Private transfer: the family and luggage answer
A fixed-price car with a local driver is the option that scales: ski bags and strollers fit, you stop at the Enguri dam viewpoint when you want, and the mountain section is driven by someone who does it weekly. Mestia to Ushguli
The 47 km to Ushguli — Europe's highest permanently inhabited village — take 1.5–2 hours on a partly unpaved road. In dry summer local drivers run it in ordinary minivans; after rain or in winter you want a 4x4 and local hands. Day trips are easy to arrange in Mestia itself, or agree it upfront with your transfer driver.
Winter notes
The Zugdidi–Mestia road stays open year-round for the Hatsvali and Tetnuldi ski areas, with short weather closures. Winter here is even less the place for improvised street-taxi rides than the Gudauri road — proper tyres and a local driver are non-negotiable.
