Just 25 km inland, Mtirala National Park is one of the wettest and greenest places in Georgia, a temperate rainforest of ferns and mossy beech where you can hike to a waterfall and swim in a cold mountain lake, or try the zipline across the gorge. South of Batumi toward the Turkish border, the Roman-era Gonio-Apsaros fortress guards the coast, with massive walls and a small museum.
